Clear consensus

Anthony Robson (Letters, 10 December) confuses "how science works" with how rational decisions are made. To act on the conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and 84 per cent of scientists (that the earth is warming because of human activity) is not to make a decision by "democratic process"; it is to accept that, where most of us are non-experts, the rational course is to accept and act on the overwhelming opinion of those who are.

Looking at the best available science, the economic catastrophe referred to by Mr Robson appears likely to follow inaction rather than action on climate change.
