Class path

Emily Thornberry MP – until last week shadow Attorney General – comes from a working-class council estate and joined the middle classes as a barrister but, unlike similar products like me, joined the Labour Party rather than the
Tories.

With a wry sense of humour typical of those who travel that passage she tweeted a photo of a home decked in England flags with an iconic white van parked outside.

I took it as a sign of her
dismay that Rochester voters had fallen under the spell of a neo-Thatcherite tribute party led by an enterprising former public schoolboy and City
trader.

Of course such irony is lost on a member of the “Labour aristocracy” from Hampstead, who studied PPE at Oxford and went straight to work for Gordon Brown at the Treasury.
