Church inequality

I AM exasperated by the continued defence of anti-gay discrimination within the Church on the basis of what Richard Lucas calls “the clear teachings of the Bible” (Letters, 24 May).

On the same page, David Robertson insists that the Church should be governed by “the word of God” and not “the passing fashions of the age”. Does he really believe that gay equality is a “passing fashion”? It’s an old argument, but one I have yet to hear answered: do Mr Lucas and Mr Robertson also advocate the Bible’s teachings on witch burning and stoning, or were those things a passing fashion of the age?

Any other group in either the public or private sphere displaying this level of discrimination would, rightly, attract the attention of equality laws.
