Chilling decision

Your report (Business, 24 September), that Centrica has abandoned a project to build a gas storage facility, is disturbing news.

The reason given is that the government will not subsidise this increase in storage capacity, which stands at only 15-days’ supply compared with 122 days in France.

Rather than ensuring that we don’t run out of gas or are forced to buy in supplies from Russia when prices are at their highest in the middle of winter, the government is spending this money instead on subsidising the construction of costly, ugly and unreliable wind farms which rarely generate electricity on the coldest days.

You could not make it up.
