NOW that everyone has access to the internet, it is generally unwise to make blanket assertions like “There has never been a single study to prove that immigrants are more ambitious, more conscientious, more diligent than their British counterparts” (Mark Boyle, Letters, 16 March). A few seconds on Google is sufficient to show this statement is untrue.

Research by the National Institute for Social and Economic Research showed companies that recruited foreign workers found them on average to be better educated and to work harder. And Professor Sir David Metcalf of the London School of Economics told MPs that migrant workers “worked harder, learnt faster and were more highly motivated.
