Cathedral query

I have often thought how
ludicrous it is that the presbyterian Hie Kirk of Edinburgh hangs on to its brief 17th-century status as a “cathedral”, but having just read a quote in your paper from “one of the canons at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh” (“New Kirk moderator given second chance”, 29 October), I see that I am the one who is out of date.

Is St Giles’ an anomaly, or has the Kirk in general reverted to its full medieval hierarchy of bishops and archbishops, deans and archdeacons?

At least this would provide
a much-needed promotion structure.
