Caring mission

Hugh Mackenzie (Letters, 27 November) poses a false dichotomy. It is not a case of either “worrying about a box of old bones” or doing something about the poor in the Third World. It is possible to do both. Indeed, as Pope Francis is Latin American, its people may have a special interest in the “box of old bones”.

However that may be, the Church is the second largest international development body (after the UN) and the second largest humanitarian agency (after the Red Cross).
