Carbisdale statues

I was interested to read about the sale of the statues (your report, 23 April) as my uncle, the late David Smith, was sent to Italy by the dowager duchess to purchase these statue.

He was her head gardener and the idea was to lay out an Italian garden at Carbisdale, but, sadly the duchess died before this was done.

She must have thought a lot of my uncle as she left him a very nice legacy in her will!
