Capitalist slur

IN COMMENTING on the decline and fall of the Soviet Union in the mid-80s (Perspective, 14 September), Allan Massie says that “free market capitalism seemed to be the wave of the future – another mistaken assumption, we may say”.

In what way has free-market capitalism been proven false?

The fact is that the supposed “crisis in capitalism” in the world today is, in fact, a crisis in interventionism. Governments worldwide excessively regulate and tax their economies and, crucially, expand and inflate the currency by means of central banks, giving us the dreaded ‘boom-and-bust’ cycle. This cycle will only end when governments cease to intervene in the money supply and call it capitalism.
