Capital flight

Dan Macdonald (Letters, 1 August) notes that “Scotland is particularly well-placed geographically to be a European hub for links to North America”.

This was apparent to airlines KLM and SAS many years ago when they sought to increase their flights through Prestwick Airport to make it their hub for flights between Europe and North America.

The British authorities refused these applications because they wanted the business for London.

KLM and SAS then stopped their existing fights through Prestwick and were instrumental in the creation of very successful hub airports at Schiphol and Copenhagen.

If only Scotland had been independent…
