Cap Arctic wells

Despite requests from organisations such as Greenpeace for Cairn Energy to release its oil-spill response plan – should such an event happen in the Arctic – into the public domain, the company consistently refused to do so (your reports).

It was only when the government of Greenland became aware of the public concern through a 100,000-strong petition that it decided to publish the plan.

An international oil spill expert has since been asked to scrutinise the plan and the conclusion reached was that it was outlandish, simplistic and “wholly inadequate”.

It is alleged that Cairn Energy itself would consider an oil spill in the Arctic to be well-nigh impossible to clean up. Why has there been no outright condemnation of Cairn Energy over its secrecy in this matter?

Time I think for the Greenland government to refuse any further licences to drill in the Arctic.
