Cake banks?

Effusive about a glitzy Ryder Cup launch event, the chairman of VisitScotland deliriously declares that “the £90 million arts industry joins with the £1.1 billion golf industry, with a sprinkling of the £11 billion tourism industry” (Friends of The Scotsman, 4 September).

Sadly absent from this turgidly ostentatious economic bluster is any indication that the lavish
opulence of these “industries” might diminish the need for
food banks in contemporary Scotland.

Evidently, the inspiration for such fatuously flamboyant
sloganeering is Marie Antoinette.
