Brush with a king

I was delighted to see the photograph (2 June) of the Queen with King Olav of Norway as they processed by carriage down Edinburgh’s High Street in 1962.

As a fourth-year student at Edinburgh Art College at the time, I remember cheerfully ignoring demands that we stayed at our easels and instead, along with a friend, downed paint brushes and joined in the crowds watching the procession.

Needless to say, quite a few other fellow art students were among the crowd, and it inspired one very good painting from my companion, at least.
