Bruce issue

REGARDING Robert Seaton’s point (Letters, 19 May) that the Earl of Elgin was not the most prominent descendant of Robert the Bruce, surely the Earl of Elgin is not even a direct descendant of the Bruce?

I am reminded that when his name appeared in our local newspaper some years ago he was described as a “collateral descendant”, whatever that is.

Perhaps one of The Scotsman’s readers could clarify?

Regarding Mr Seaton’s comments on meritocracy, I would wholeheartedly agree. The opinions of Jock Bruce, the man who sells the Big Issue in any Scottish town, are just as valid as his kinsman who lives in Broomhall.
