Brown hypocrisy

Malcolm Parkin's narrow view of Gordon Brown as the "Anti-Christ of economics" (Letters, 22 February) is one-dimensional. He fails to mention Mr Brown's famous "moral compass", which miraculously points in whatever direction Mr Brown wants. He also fails to mention Mr Brown's "Golden Rules" governing his fiscal policy as chancellor – possibly the only occasion when gold was more akin to a throwaway elastic band than a precious metal.

Admittedly, Mr Parkin's letter came before the latest allegations about Mr Brown being a foul-mouthed bully. In almost all his actions, it would seem Mr Brown has betrayed his prudent, Presbyterian Scottish roots, and to boast about them is the height of hypocrisy.
