Bridge of sighs

On Sunday morning, on our way to Edinburgh, we joined a queue of traffic waiting to cross the Forth Road Bridge, reaching it at 9.45. A notice told us that men were working on the bridge, so we were therefore not surprised that the southbound carriageway had been completely closed to traffic.

As we moved to the single track on the northbound carriageway, we expected to see at least a vestige of work going on. There was one truck with flashing lights slewed across the southbound carriageway and, other than that, not one man anywhere, no sign of equipment, nothing! Had the "cone fairies" gone completely mad and forced the patient traffic to come to a standstill for the fun of it?

To those whose job it is to timetable works on the bridge, please at least attempt to put one man out there when causing such havoc. Or, failing that (and it was a Sunday, so maybe everyone was sleeping in), use a waxwork dummy – three standing talking would be even more realistic – then we wouldn't notice the difference.
