Bridge magic

AMID all the tragic news which fills the columns of The Scotsman each day, it is refreshing to acknowledge that the Forth Bridge is the latest Scots icon to win Unesco World Heritage status (your report, 6 July).

Perhaps it was even more appropriate that a few hours after the announcement was made that a Fife Circle steam-hauled train, powered by 60163 (Tornado) and organised by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, should cross the bridge watched by hundreds of railway enthusiasts and many others.

It was one of two tours on the day to mark the 125th anniversary of the bridge.
