Bridge is in no danger

There is no danger that the Forth Road Bridge will have to close for HGVs before the 120-year designed life of the bridge is reached (your report, 13 February).

The corrosion in the main cables (normal in most bridges) is being tackled by drying out the cables, a technique which is reliable enough to have been implemented on no fewer than 16 suspension bridges around the world. Even if this fails for some reason, cable augmentation can be carried out by adding an additional cable alongside, without closing the bridge.

So Stewart Stevenson will be wasting 4.22 billion of our money on a bridge we don't need.
