The 1964 bridge cost £24 million, The 2007 one is to cost £4.2 billion (your report, 20 December).

At 1964 prices, the new bridge will cost 291 million. That is over ten times the cost of the first bridge. This is absurd. Is the new bridge really ten times better? Gold-plated and diamond-studded, maybe?
