Breaking up

Iain WD Forde (Letters, 14 November) is mistaken. Although the kingdoms of England and Scotland were united under one monarch in 1603, the formal creation of the “United Kingdom…” was not made until the second Act of Union in 1801.

Consequently, one needs to distinguish between the SNP’s intention to share the kingdom under one monarch in an independent Scotland and its intention of breaking up the constitutional “United Kingdom…” The latter would mean tearing up the “for ever” Treaty of Union and the 1801 Act.
