BP's oil spill bill

Are there others like myself who wonder whether BP's acceptance of financial liability for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will end up being picked up by the British taxpayer, as this global company suddenly rediscovers its Britishness and finds a way to chisel the cash out of our government, or by jacking up retail prices?

If a British company picks up the tab for an oil spill which damages the USA, shouldn't American companies be picking up the tab for the sub-prime mortgages they sold to the rest of the world?
