Bottling it

Touché, Dan Arnott! (Letters 22 May) You exposed the big weakness in my defence of the deposit on bottles, namely that it penalises the diligent recyclers.

I return, however, to my original cause, which is the appalling amount of litter lying and blowing around our streets.

Education and oration do not seem to be effective, so what is needed is a more aggressive campaign against the litter-louts, with police and wardens empowered and encouraged to impose significant on-the-spot fines.

This should produce revenue to deal with some of the other blemishes on the face of our beautiful city.
