Mary Brown (Letters, 27 February) raises crucial issues about “what is happening to public trust” in various social institutions.

Haven’t different social philosophers suggested it is trust in money and its institutions that is fundamental?

Arguably, public trust in all forms of authority is undermined by banking scandals like Libor manipulation.

Moreover, as money is the basis of capitalist societies, any uncertainty about its value breeds distrust.

How far have we departed today from the once respected motto, “My word is my bond”?
