Bloody anthem

Mike Twaddle (Letters, 1 May) suggests a new Scottish anthem, possibly to be called Advance Bonny Scotland.

The word “kitsch” springs to mind. He may think Scots Wha Hae too bloody but few nations have the opportunity of an anthem to a tune at least 700 years old and still going strong. The French army keep it in their repertoire as the March of the Soldiers of Robert Bruce (Marche des Soldats de Robert Bruce). It seems unlikely that the French will replace their anthem, The Marseillaise, which is far bloodier than any possible Scottish anthem.
