Blacking out

Germany is bracing itself for blackouts following its decision to abandon atomic power (your report, 31 August).

This comes as no surprise to the majority of people but politicians, especially Scottish politicians, are blind to the dangers.

The German federal government will not introduce a climate change bill in parliament and thus plans for a reduction in CO² emissions have been relegated to non-binding letters of intent.

Since nuclear is free of CO² emissions, how are they going to compensate for the eight reactors they immediately switched off after the Fukushima disaster? Your report also states that Germany is importing huge amounts of nuclear-generated electricity from France and the Czech Republic. This is hypocritical.

Germany has also slowed the expansion of renewable energy industry by cutting subsidies and using some of it to subsidise the construction of new coal-fired power plants.

Bang goes its CO² reduction targets but it will keep the lights on.

However, the Scottish Government knows it can turn water into wine or in this case wind into reliable electricity and sell the surplus at a handsome profit.

Alex Salmond’s “green dream” is turning into an everlasting nightmare for the rest of us.
