Black thoughts

Earlier this week I noticed the first lapwing of the year returning to its nesting site near my home. Their numbers have plummeted over the past ten year, together with those of the curlew, oystercatchers, even blackgame, that share that field.

Five minutes later a raven flew over the site, landing in a tree to overlook it. Raven numbers have risen here as dramatically as those of the smaller birds have declined.

Are my thoughts criminal to wish the roles reversed?
