Biblical ‘facts’

As a member of the Church of Scotland I really felt put to shame by Neil Barber’s letter (26 May) on equal marriage.

His Biblical knowledge is
better than mine as I had forgotten about Abraham marrying his sister in the Book of Genesis and I would not be able to say where in the Old Testament it says that a rapist must marry his victim.

His letter is an example of one thing I have noticed about secularists, namely that many of them seem to have an authoritative knowledge of the Bible.

Reading Sir Ludovic Kennedy’s book All In The Mind a number of years ago I was struck by how well he knew the Bible and Richard Dawkins
also seems to have read it quite thoroughly; in fact he has described it as a great work of literature.

I think Mr Barber must have missed what Jesus said about marriage in Matthew 19: “Have you not read that the creator from the beginning made them male and female and that he said: ‘This is why a man must leave father and mother and cling to his wife and the two become one body’?”
