Scottish Natural Heritage is right to oppose wind farms in Sutherland (your report, 11 May).

We did not enact the Clearances only to have the crofters replaced by wind turbines.

But the worst impact on large areas of wild land is caused by tourists. This is clear from the example of Switzerland, where the wild alpine areas are full of telecabine runs, power lines, roads and, most intrusive of all, revolving restaurants on the mountain peaks.

In the old days people had to climb the mountains from the bottom, carrying with them their own food. Scottish National Heritage should ban tourists unless they walk from Inverness.
