Belief challenge

There are those who find it difficult to accept the demise of Christianity in our society, and wish to preserve its continued privileged place in our schools (Letters, 8 August.)

The Scotsman should take heart from the observation of activist and writer Annie Besant (1847-1933), ‘‘Once encourage the human mind to think, and bounds to the thinking can never again be set by authority. Once challenge traditional
beliefs, and the challenge will ring on every shield which is hanging in the intellectual arena.’’
