Dresden was an integral part of Germany when it was razed by the Allies in 1945.
East Berlin was part of Germany until the Soviet Union set it up as capital of an “independent” puppet state and built the walls dividing the city.
Edinburgh was never part of England, even before 1314, and the walls separating the two countries were built by the Romans 2,000 years ago.
If the division and subsequent reunification of Germany is a good example for any part of Britain then it is much more relevant to Northern Ireland.
This was also a recent creation of its large neighbouring power and the walls dividing parts of Belfast are quite recent.
