Being of service

The dictionary definition of “independent” invariably refers to an entity “free from control in action, judgment; not dependent on anything else for function; and not reliant on the support of others”.

Yet Alex Salmond’s vision for an “independent” Scotland foresees this country at Europe’s top table constrained by the EU’s rules and regulations on trade, employment, the legal system etc and on the horizon, a fiscal straitjacket on tax and spending.

He also admits that if the Scottish economy got into difficulties, the Bank of England would be asked for financial support, albeit as a last resort.

This is hardly the type of independence I would envisage for a vibrant Scotland, swapping one master for another.
