Beaver boost

The Scottish Wildlife Trust welcomes the RSPB support for the reintroduction of beavers to Scotland (your report, 1 September).

Your readers may be interested to know that last year, a five-year trial reintroduction of beavers into the Knapdale area of Argyll was successfully concluded by the Scottish Wildlife Trust in partnership with the Royal Zoological Society of
Scotland.

The aim of the Scottish Wildlife Trust is not just to protect our remaining wildlife, but to restore nature to full health across Scotland for the benefit of this, and future, generations.

Enriching our landscapes with natural “ecosystem engineers” like beavers is vital to achieving this goal.

The trust sincerely hopes Scottish ministers will soon officially welcome the beaver back home to Scotland, and looks forward to working constructively with RSPB and many other partners in land management, forestry, farming and tourism to ensure this spectacular animal thrives in our landscapes once again.
