BBC strengths

I found myself very much in agreement with Peter Jones’s piece about the BBC (Perspective, 1 September). The idea that somehow a “deficit” exists where licence fee contributors in Scotland are not getting a fair return for their investment is nonsense.

These days my main consumption from the corporation’s output is BBC Radio 6 Music – probably regarded as a minority interest, but it is precisely why public service broadcasting is vital; it is only with funding from across the UK that the BBC can deliver a wide range of programming.

A Scottish broadcasting service would never be able to match the breadth of the entire BBC output. Wherever we are in the UK we can all enjoy diverse programming which is not driven by the lowest common denominator from commercial pressures resulting in the same bland offerings wherever you are.
