IT IS good to see that the “Old Boys’ Network” has been put to one side for once with the appointment of Canadian Mark Carney as the next Governor of the Bank of England to succeed Sir Mervyn King.

Why couldn’t the same sort of thing have happened to the post of director-general at the BBC, where George Entwistle is to be replaced with another former BBC insider, Lord Hall, leaving ­Auntie to continue on her old inward-looking way.
