Barbour legacy

I WAS delighted to learn that Sir Alex Ferguson has pledged £5,000 to the campaign to erect a statue in honour of social reformer Mary Barbour in Glasgow.

Like Sir Alex, Mary came from Govan and is rightly regarded as one of the most important social reformers of the last century.

The Saltire Society celebrated her as one of the first in our Outstanding Women of Scotland social media campaign. To mark International Women’s Day 2015 in March, we welcomed the first ten inductees from science, law, politics and the arts into our “Outstanding Women of Scotland” list. Inductee, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon cited Mary as an inspiration and a personal hero.
