Authority bias

The Academics for Yes campaign (Letters, 18 February) has relinquished any pretence at intellectual impartiality at the onset and hence displays a contempt for the voters of Scotland.

In behavioural economics it is called “authority bias”. “We the undersigned are really clever, some of us are professors, and we say you should vote Yes.”

Scottish academics can provide a useful service for the people of Scotland by providing evidence from both sides of the independence debate and allowing the voters to draw their own conclusions based on the evidence.
