Austerity reality

Your editorial on austerity (8 April) rather dodges the central proposition. The real, disposable incomes of the poorest people in our community are being reduced, step by step and day by day, as the value of any welfare payments they receive is cut back.

This is not an end of austerity, good news story but an unprovoked assault on those least able to defend themselves.

Cold, dark houses, food poverty and rising debt and desolation are not the inevitable consequences of economic recession, but the deliberate acts of a government which has long since lost any moral authority.
