Assault charges

As I see it, John Wilson was acquitted of the assault on Neil Lennon because the jury were not convinced that the assault had a sectarian element to it (your report, 1 September). Wilson admitted in court that he had struck Lennon, and the Crown Office and Scottish judicial system have been made to look foolish. As a layman, it seems to me that the Crown Office should now charge Wilson with common assault. There is obviously ample evidence on which to base this charge, and in view of the evidence, he would probably plead guilty. There would be only a minimal cost involved, but it would be money well spent to see justice done.

Am I missing something?

The hysteria in some quarters over the Neil Lennon verdict is ludicrous but entirely predictable. The outcome of the case is perfectly understandable. There was clear doubt about the sectarian aspect of the charges – and presumably the defendant didn’t do enough to Mr Lennon for the jury to find him guilty of assault.

Nonetheless, the defendant has been imprisoned for around four months. In a previous incident, a fan who ran onto the pitch to try to accost Derek Riordan of Hibs was fined £400.
