Artistic romance

I WAS interested to read the article about the forthcoming film on Effie Gray (your report,
4 July) as she was my great-grandfather’s niece. I would, however, like to take issue about two statements in the article.

You state that Effie and Sir John Everett Millais had a passionate affair and that after their marriage they lived in Scotland. Effie and Millais fell in love while Millais was painting her then husband John Ruskin, but they did not have an affair in the modern sense of the word. They spent most of their married life in London, although they often visited Scotland and Effie was buried in Kinoull cemetry in Perth.
