Art for art’s sake

The film manager of Film Edinburgh tell us that “the network of film offices around Scotland are working together more efficiently with Historic Scotland, National Trust for Scotland, Creative Scotland and VisitScotland, with a recent Commonwealth Games event showcasing a more collective approach to marketing Scotland” (Friends of The Scotsman, 13 August).

If the loftiest aspiration of Scotland’s film “industry” is to enhance Scotland’s tourism industry, then Creative Scotland might as well be streamlined into a subsidiary of VisitScotland.

The resultant savings could be channelled directly into innovative indigenous film-making, rather than dispersed into labyrinthine layers of pious parasitic bureaucracy.
