Arriva exit

You reported (19 April) that the Competition Commission has put on hold the takeover by McGill’s of the bus services operated by Arriva to the west of Glasgow, a welcome takeover as Arriva wishes to leave the area.

Support for bus services is being cut back as the government reduces, for example, fuel duty rebate and yet it seems to prefer duplication to a largely efficient co-ordinated system such as we enjoy in Edinburgh.

And it will take until October to make a decision. In the meantime Arriva could just surrender its licences, leaving the field clear for McGill’s. What’s the big difference?
