Apex of the class system

The ban on fox hunting is being flouted because the law is not being enforced, and it is not being enforced because its chief proponents occupy the very apex of the class system. If there is "class war" going on, as Katie Grant affirms (Opinion 26 December), it is the landowning establishment that is waging it.

Any clever solicitor can make the law look like an ass, as the foxhunters, Trevor Adams and Rory Innes, were able to do by hiring expensive briefs.

We didn't hear much complaining from police chiefs about lack of manpower and resources when dealing with secondary picketing during the miners' strike. Clearly, the National Union of Mineworkers is a different kettle of fish compared to the Countryside Alliance. So don't expect another Battle of Orgreave enacted on a Buccleuch estate over blood sport.

It is not how the system works.
