Ane o’ our awyn

Iain WD Forde (Letters, 31 October) rightly protests that a crossword in The Scotsman described Gavin Douglas’s magnificent translation of the Aeneid as “English”.

To correct such misapprehensions, a memorial flagstone celebrating the 500th anniversary of Douglas’s Eneados, will be unveiled by the Duke of Hamilton in Edinburgh’s Makars’ Court at 11am on 15 November. The quotation from Eneados on the stone emphasises the point: “…mak it braid and plane/kepand na sudron bot our awyn langage”. There will be readings of Gavin Douglas’s poetry and all are welcome to attend.
