Ancient tongues
I’m reluctant to join in this debate, not being a native speaker of ancient Greek like some of your correspondents, but surely the name Charon is not pronounced Sharon, nor yet Care-un (“Say it right”, Letters 27 July), but Charon, just as written, with the Ch representing the guttural sound in Scots “loch”, which in the Greek alphabet resembles our “X”.
Similarly, the Greek “Oxi” meaning “no”, which can be seen in TV news items about Greek street demonstrations, is pronounced as in “ochone, ochone”, and not as in English “ox”.
