Amazonian feat

Hugh Andrew’s griping swipe at the Scottish Government (Perspective, 8 December) for supporting the expansion of Amazon’s distribution centres in Scotland shows a tragic dearth of logic.

Amazon is succeeding and Mr Andrew’s businesses are suffering because of fundamental changes in the pattern of retailing worldwide.

Those changes will continue apace quite irrespective of whether the new breed of online retailers employ people in Scotland or not.

By encouraging such operations to locate in Scotland, Alex Salmond is fulfilling his duty to boost employment in our country without adding, in even the smallest measure, to Mr Andrew’s woes.
