All was calm

Because I had been working on Christmas Day, had no easy access to public transport, and had consumed a week’s worth of calories in two days, I decided to walk home.

I thought I might feel a tad melancholy strolling alone down Edinburgh’s Princes Street late in the afternoon on the 25th, but I was instead filled with joy at seeing all the shops closed.

This was such a beautiful contrast to the days and weeks running up to Christmas, and of course the scenes we witnessed on Boxing Day.

Tourists were free to take their time looking at the lights and the Castle without fear of getting in shoppers’ ways, and everybody smiled at each other.

It was a moment to savour.
