Air safety

I can’t be the only person wondering about helicopter safety, following the latest tragedy that resulted in the death of a pilot and his passenger after their aircraft took off from a Scottish airfield (your report, 18 September).

This latest fatal crash, as well as the Clutha event in Glasgow and recent North Sea disasters, give the impression that helicopters are the least reliable form of transport.

But does anyone have any statistics on the subject? Do helicopters simply seem like death traps because whenever one goes down it makes the news?

I would be curious to find out. In the meantime, I feel very sorry for people who have no choice but to travel in them.
