Amid the justified outrage over abuse in Catholic settings, we should remember the key child protection philosophy of never covering up abuse is a relatively recent development.. The scale of the scandal is due in part to the vast numbers looked after by the church. The National Secular Society had no abuse in its care homes and orphanages – but that's because it didn't run any.
