Abolition anomaly

Ian Stewart (Letters, 2 December) must be incredibly naive if he thinks “the abolition of taxpayer-funded Catholic education would free up hundreds of millions of pounds”.

Presumably, on his argument, Catholic children would no longer get any education, since if they did, schools would still have to be provided, which would cost money.

Also, does he not realise that Catholics are taxpayers too?

He should also consider that the Catholic Church lit the lamp of education in this country, founding three universities, at a time when England, a much bigger country, had only two.
