A good causeway

The case for a power generating causeway over the River Forth is well made by TA Davidson (Letters, 24 March). I made similar comments in my submission to Transport Scotland when it held a consultation on the form of a new crossing. Sadly, the options under consideration were a bridge, or a tunnel. Causeways, or enhancements of the existing bridge, were non-starters.

That is a pity because with both options we had a chance to restore the reputation of Scottish engineering, now a global laughing stock, epitomised by the rusting cables on the Forth Road Bridge.

However, rather than saying "if only", we should be making sure that if a new bridge is needed there are sufficient safeguards built into legislation to ensure that the costs to the taxpayer are kept down.

As a minimum we must ensure that anti-corruption and Freedom of Information measures are in place to allow public scrutiny and prevent price rigging among contractors, a huge problem in the construction industry.
